2025 Set to Become the Year of Crypto Diversification as Institutional Interest in Altcoins Grows
Matt Hougan, the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Bitwise, predicts a surge of institutional interest in altcoins by 2025, driven by growing regulatory clarity and the rise of exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Hougan revealed that institutional investors are starting to explore cryptocurrency options beyond Bitcoin. He emphasized that the trend of diversification, commonly seen in traditional asset classes such as equities and bonds, will soon extend to the crypto market.
A Gradual Shift in Institutional Investing
According to Hougan, this evolution in institutional investing is already in motion. He pointed to the example of Ethereum ETFs, which initially experienced lukewarm interest after their launch but have recently gained billions in inflows. This demonstrates the increasing willingness of institutions to explore assets outside of Bitcoin.
“Historically, people enter the crypto market through Bitcoin,” Hougan explained. “From there, they discover Ethereum and other altcoins like Solana. There’s no reason to assume that institutions following this pattern won’t continue to diversify their holdings in the future.”
Index-Based Strategies to Go Mainstream
Hougan forecasts that 2025 will be a pivotal year for index-based crypto investing strategies. These diversified approaches, pioneered by Bitwise in 2017, aim to provide broad exposure to the cryptocurrency market and reduce the risks associated with single-asset investments.
“In 2025, I believe we’ll see an explosion of interest in index strategies, giving investors diversified exposure to crypto,” Hougan said. “This will become a mainstream way of allocating funds to the crypto space, similar to how institutions approach stocks, bonds, and real estate today.”

The predicted wave of interest is expected to stem largely from enhanced regulatory clarity and the continued expansion of cryptocurrency ETFs. These developments could provide the framework needed for institutions to confidently integrate a wider range of digital assets into their portfolios.
